Tire Chains

Tire chains are an extremely important piece of equipment that every motorist living in an area with frequent snowy conditions should have in their car. They are used to enhance traction and control during snowy or icy conditions on the road. It is important that every motorist familiarize themselves with tire chains because they could possibly save their life one day. The video on the right gives detailed visual instructions on how to install and tighten tire chains. Below are the main points that the video provides.

Getting Started:

  • Tire chains always go on the drive wheels. Make sure you know if your vehicle has front, rear, or all wheel drive.
  • Use the correct size of chain for your tire. Check the sidewall for your tire size.
Installing Tire Chains:
  1. Lay the chains on the ground. Make sure the metal hooks are facing down.
  2. Drive your vehicle halfway onto the chains.
  3. Drape the chains over both sides of the tire.
  • Remember to keep the cable connectors on the outside.
  • Reach behind the tire and connect and the connector cables on the inside first.
  • If you have trouble reaching, try turning the steering wheel for a better angle.
  • Once the cables are connected and secured on the inside, begin working cables around the wheel.
4. Keep the chains tight!
  • Connect a bungee cord to the chains.
Safety Tips:
  • Tighten the chains every few miles to prevent them from coming loose and damaging your car.
  • Always apply the parking brake when installing or tightening the chains.
  • Drive slowly ( 30 mph) to prevent the chains from coming off the tires.
  • Practice putting chains on in advance.
